Seasonal inconveniences

Seasonal inconveniences are events caused by occasional pollution contributions to the sea. They can cause a temporary bathing prohibition. In particular, they can be classified as:

  • Short-term pollution: it is a microbiological contamination, that has clearly identifiable causes, is not normally expected to affect bathing water quality for more than approximately 72 hours after the bathing water quality is first affected and for which the competent authority has established procedures to predict and deal with;
  • abnormal situation: it is an event or combination of events impacting on bathing water quality at the location concerned and not expected to occur on average more than once every four years;
  • pollution events, not included in the previous classes.

In such cases, competent authorities shall take timely and adequate management measures. Such measueres are taken with a view to preventing bathers´ exposure to pollution, to reduce risk or to eliminate the causes of pollution and improve the quality of waters.
They also include information to the public.

Adequate management measures taken with a view to preventing bathers´ exposure to pollution shall be taken also in areas with sewage overflows into the sea. Such measures, aiming at preventing exposition to pollution, are taken when overflows are opened.

In the Legislation section you can view the municipalities that have adopted preventive management measures and the related municipal ordinances for the last bathing season.
